Essences for Dealing with Poor Air Quality

I have received many emails and calls about the smoke in the Southwest due to some huge fires on the border in Arizona, and smaller fires near Taos. I thought I would take the opportunity to share some thoughts about how essences can help us whenever air quality is severely compromised…whether it be from forest fires, smoke from building fires, toxins in the air from chemical spills, decaying matter (after catastrophies), the spraying of pesticides, chemtrails, etc.

You want to approach the situation from several standpoints: First, you want to enable your respiratory system to function as effectively as possible. Here, your key essences would be Eucalyptus Blue Mallee (Cryptone or Cineole type), Eucalyptus Radiata (True) or Eucalyptus Masala; conifers such as Fir Balsam or Fir Grand, or White or Black Spruce; and a Myrtle or a Ravensara. Any of these could be applied to the chest, back, or under the chin (from ear to ear), and/or placed upon an air filtering mask, if you use one.

You also want to help to neutralize the toxins you’re being exposed to and help your body’s filtration system process them. Key essences here are Laurel Leaf (on the chest, the back), Patchouli (soles of the feet, the back) and Cypress or Grapefruit oils. Although Grapefruit is pretty mild on the skin, as citruses go, it is a good idea to start on the soles of the feet, and do a test patch on the arms or back, before applying it elsewhere on the body.

Finally, you want to keep your immune system as strong as possible. All of those above, especially the eucalyptuses and conifers, are great for the immune system. Others that are especially powerful are Black Cumin (taken orally) and Frankincense (applied topically). Elemi, which in years past was known as “poor man’s Frankincense”, is also wonderful for keeping the immune system strong.

So…support your breathing apparatus, neutralize and release the toxins, and keep your immune system strong. You will be amazed at how helpful the essences can be, and how quickly you will feel less labored in your breathing and less congestion or irritation in your lungs.
