Ajowan…Essence 2 of my “Julie & Julia” Inspired Goal to Blog about all 240 of the Wisdom of the Earth Aromatherapy Essences

Zen skyscrapperDay 2 of my journey (I almost feel like saying pilgrimage) through the 200+ pure essential oils offered by Wisdom of the Earth. Today, I am exploring my own relationship with Ajowan. My husband LOVES Ajowan for her ability to get him to sleep w

When he wakes up in the middle of the night. When all else fails…Ajowan on the soles of his feet put him into a peaceful sleep.

Ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi) comes from India…she is a very strong essence…in smell and in temperature…she can be quite hot on the skin, thus our practice of putting her on the soles of our feet. She can be used on other parts of the body, but layered between two cool essences to insulate her heat. The essence is made from the seeds of the plant via steam diajowan-seedstillation. ajowan-plantAt left, the seed, and the plant it comes from.

When I opened the bottle, she literally jumped out at me (or, at least, her smell did). She is definitely an attention-getter. When I put her on the soles of my feet and took a big whiff of her from the bottle, the first, clear message was “I am a ‘BIG GUN’”. Wow, I thought…she must be hugely anti-viral. That she is, as well as highly anti-bacterial.

Our Reference Guide says that she is anti-septic, good for spastic colon, and deep-seated congestion. She is also good for bronchitis and other severe respiratory conditions.

I got a shiver down my spine when I put her on. I got the clear feeling that is is not one to be messed with…she is for serious issues that others have failed at…or perhaps, have not acted as quickly or as completely as needed (for example, when the virus or cold just won’t go away…or keeps coming back).

I remember a client of mine back in Pennsylvania…her husband couldn’t sleep at night because he feet ached…this had been a problem for years, and no doctor he had consulted had really been able to get to the bottom of it, or had been able to prescribe something that had resolved the pain. I remembered that Ajowan was good for insomnia…as well as muscles, and he had mentioned that he often got cramps or spasms in his feet. So…I suggested he try Ajowan. My client was overjoyed to report to me that, the first time her husband used the Ajowan on his feet (about 5-7 drops on the sole of each foot)…he slept through the night for the first time that either of them could remember!!

So…Ajowan is a force to be reckoned with! She is not for the faint of heart, and if you are using her for respiratory issues, you will need to layer her between two other cool essences. So, if you had bronchitis, you could first feather in 8-10 drops of Eucalyptus Blue Mallee (cryptone type) on your chest (or your back). Then you could follow with 5-7 drops of the Ajowan well within the perimeter of the Eucalyptus. You could finish with 8-10 drops of something like Fir, Balsam or Fir, Douglas, which are also good for respiratory issues, but are yin (cool) in temperature. Layered between the two yin essences, Ajowan should be able to work her magic without irritating the skin.

What a great visit I had with Ajowan today!! Literally unknown in this country, she is a fabulous essence…if you are ready to handle her power!

Blessings, Audre
